The Francois’ Langur — Black Elves on the Cliffs of Guizhou

Guizhou is a kingdom of karst, karst landscapes account for 73% of the province's total area, making it one of the most complete and best-preserved karst regions on Earth. This unique terrain has become a refuge for countless extraordinary creatures. Home to over 24,500 species of plants and animals, Guizhou ranks among China's top regions for biodiversity, where rare species thrive in endless cycles of life. The series Guizhou’s Rare Creatures invites you to walk this land, to witness the spark of life and the harmonious coexistence between humans and nature.

April 8 marks the International Rare Animal Protection Day, a day set in the season of renewal, symbolizing the hope of life and the duty to protect it.

Deep in the Wuling Mountains of northeastern Guizhou, the Wujiang River has carved a steep canyon where towering cliffs rise thousands of feet, forests stretch deep, and valleys remain shrouded in mist. Within this 31,113-hectare karst sanctuary lies the Mayang River National Nature Reserve in Guizhou. On these near-vertical rock faces lives one of the world's most endangered primates — the Francois' langur.

With jet-black fur, a mohawk-like crest, and white "whiskers" on both cheeks, these monkeys are slender and agile. Their long limbs and a tail even longer than their bodies serve as powerful tools for navigating sheer cliffs with ease. But what's most astonishing are their infants: newborns are covered in brilliant golden fur, like a tiny sun clinging to its mother's chest. It takes about a year for the gold to gradually fade, replaced by the species' iconic black coat.

The rugged landscape of Mayang River — with its cliffs and caves — provides the perfect habitat for Francois' langurs. The reserve is home to 2,455 species of wild plants, over 250 of which are natural food sources for the monkeys. The dense primeval forests form a solid ecological shield.

With only about 2,000 Francois' langurs left in the world, more than 550 live in the Mayang River reserve — over a quarter of the global population. This makes the reserve the world's largest and most concentrated habitat for wild Francois' langurs, earning it the title "Kingdom of the Francois' Langur."

To ensure these monkeys have enough to eat and a safe place to live, local people have put tremendous effort into conservation. Within the core areas where the langurs roam, they have planted native food plants such as Mallotus barbatus and Morus macroura, creating a 500-acre supplementary forest stocked with the flowers, fruits, and tender leaves the langurs love. In addition, the reserve has established an intelligent monitoring system that provides round-the-clock record of monkey activity. More than 300 families from the core zone have volunteered to take part in conservation efforts. As a result, the langur population in the reserve has doubled over the past thirty years, and humans and monkeys have become close "neighbors."

To protect rare animals is to protect humanity's shared future. Listen closely — deep in the lush forest, the monkeys' calls echo through the valleys. Every cry is an echo of hope.
